Grandpa's Cinnamon Rolls
1 cup tepid water, very warm not hot
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp. dry active yeast or 1 package
1/4 cup shortening, melted
3 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
2 TB ground cinnamon
1/4 cup melted butter
I use a bread machine to combine my dough. This makes the process so EASY! I will list the steps below under bread machine dough, in case you want to use your bread machine to mix the dough.
Place yeast, sugar and salt in large mixing bowl. Add water, stirring gently.
Add shortening and 1 cup flour. Continue to mix, adding egg and the remaining flour. Dough should be a little sticky to the touch.
Cover bowl with towel and let rise for 4 hours.
Roll dough out on floured surface into a rectangle. In small bowl whisk sugar and cinnamon until combined. Spread dough with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll dough jelly roll style and cut into slices.
Place on greased jelly roll pan. Cover and let rise for an additional 2 hours or until rolls have doubled in size.
Bake 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until rolls are lightly golden. Frost immediately with cinnamon roll icing.
